At the end of Fitt 4 of SGGK, most of our theories that we made at the end of Fitt 1 did not correlate with the ending of the story. Some of our theories were ridiculous and seemed almost possible to be even true. However, the ending of Fitt 4 may have left the audience with some questions...
For example, who exactly is Morgan le Fay. The only information we know is that she lives in the Green Knight's manor, "And in my manor lives the mighty Morgan le Fay" (Page 183, Line 2446). She was never mentioned earlier in the story and all of a sudden she turns out to be the one to send the Knight to King Arthur's court.
There are many other scenarios in the story that leave the audience confused. Perhaps this is why there are several theories that are made at the ending of the story.

I also wondered about Morgan Le Fay. It seemed odd that she was dropped into the story at the end. I could understand this if this poem was part of a larger story, but it didn't make any sense to put her in the end as if it explained anything. I'd assume that the audience of this poem would know more on her background.
ReplyDeleteI looked at a wikipedia page: it says Morgan Le Fay was Arthur's mortal enemy and that the Green Knight is the only story to tie Morgan Le Fay to The Green Knight who appears in other works
Your comment about Morgan Le Fay is very interesting because she is described as having magical powers and she was the one who sent the Green Knight to Arthur's castle. However, it is stated that she is Arthur's half sister and Gawain's aunt so this is how they are related. Could it be that the author wanted us to focus on her at the end because she actually had a huge role on how Gawain's adventure started?
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, I also found it interesting that none of our theories correlated with the ending of the story, but this is how conspiracy theories work: most of them are outrageous because there is little evidence to back them up and make them fact. However, I am still confused on how the Green Knight carried his head out of Arthur's castle. Since he is Lord Bertilak, was he just wearing a costume and a fake head that could be chopped off?
